Release: Social Media Marketing Unplugged

I’m happy to have helped out the team at Social Media Marketing Unplugged with some media outreach for their upcoming conference.

I’m choked I won’t be able to attend it myself, but hope to catch some follow-up video footage so I can learn from some of these amazing speakers.

The early bird rate is still in effect I believe, so catch it while you can. Students get 25% off.

Media and bloggers can request passes by contacting Jonathan at the email or number below.

My non-profit event turns 5: Van Short Film Fest

I’m really excited to (finally) blog about an event that I helped to start that’s happening at the end of this month: the Vancouver Short Film Festival on October 28-29 at the Vancity Theatre, 1181 Seymour Street in Vancouver. Click on the link or image above to go to the site.

You’ll see on my Clients page that this is one of my volunteer clients. But I don’t think of the event as being a client because it wouldn’t happen without a team of people (like many businesses). It’s been a long, hard road for our festival, so we have a lot to celebrate this year.

What’s going on this year:

October 28: International Animation Day

We wanted to kick off the festival with another expert panel this year, and upon the advice of the great Kellie Ann Benz (2009 panel moderator) we chose animation in short films. Then the NFB approached us and asked if we wanted to show their New Release Program to celebrate International Animation Day as part of their Get Animated! series. I was like, “It’s International Animation Day? Awesome!!” They wanted to make it as accessible as possible so it’s a free screening. And it sounds like they have an amazing lineup, including a short called Higglety Pigglety Pop! based on Maurice Sendak (author of Where the Wild Things Are)’s book There Must Be More to Life, co-produced by filmmaker Spike Jonze, and featuring the voices of Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker. I know! Hollywood, meet the VSFF!

Crave Coffee Chat with Felicia Lee

Last night I went to my second CRAVE event and first Coffee Chat event. CRAVE is a company that publishes books on female entrepreneurs. They started with one in Vancouver and have expanded into 22 cities globally. The 3rd Vancouver edition will come out this November with yours truly.

The topic of the discussion was “Preparing Your Business for Tough Times” and was presented by Ghost CEO Advisor Felicia Lee, who I met just a few weeks ago. There was a special appearance by Ghost CEO’s CEO Chris Flett, who is an outstanding “tell it like it is” kind of guy. The only guy allowed at these kinds of events!

The event was held at Lut Boutique on Main Street, which I actually heard about from Chris Flett. You can read about the pieces that I bought from Lut on my Review blog, but you should know that they have 20-80% off sales going on now! You can also check out their new Fall stock.

Felicia Lee is also the Director of the Enterprising Moms Network – a great resource for working moms. She wanted to present 10 no-cost tips on how to deal with tough times, instead of accepting the situation and blaming it on the “bad economy.” In under two hours, we discussed 8/10 of the tips, but if I get the additional info I’ll be sure to update this blog. It’s funny, because we discussed little about the economy and mostly on how to position our businesses. Lots of good startup and refresher juice!

Heard of Frock Swap? Now there’s Jock Swap

This would typically go on my review site, but since it’s an upcoming event and I’m helping the organizers to get the word out, I hope you will appreciate that I’m blogging on it here.

On Sunday August 8, Once Loved Threads will present the first annual Jock Swap, which is a men’s version of Frock Swap (4 years running), where ladies swap gently-worn items to “continue the art of sustainable shopping and save a buck.” This past May, over 100 swappers sifted through more than 1500 items.

After a demand for men’s only items, organizers Marjolyn Ustaris and Danielle Ow discovered “that men tend to pay more for pieces like t-shirts and hoodies and don’t have as many options for cheap and trendy fashions” like H&M and Forever 21 for women.

Shoes are also big investment items. At the Jock Swap, guys can rent tables for a fee and sell their stuff in addition to swapping items. The event promises to be a great summer social event with BBQ, live music and drinks at Box Studios, 1622 Franklin Street from 12-4pm.

For more info you can contact the ladies at info@oncelovedthreads.com or visit their sites at frockwap.ca, oncelovedthreads.com or Tweet then at @oncelovedthread.

Marjolyn Ustaris is one-third of Three Vancouver, a company that offers concierge, wardrobe styling, and “Hit & Runway” services, and style, wedding, and event consulting. She also runs a blog called mj from around the way and tweets at @aroundtheway.

Author Kim Hudson presents Virgin Archetype

I am super excited to be doing my first book project to help out Vancouver speaker, script analyst, and now author Kim Hudson and the launch of her first book, The Virgin’s Promise: Writing Stories of Feminine Creative, Spiritual, and Sexual Awakening.

Although I haven’t read the book, Kim explained very simply that the book is based on archetypes in stories presented by Joseph Campbell (The Hero’s Journey) and later on Christopher Vogler in his book, The Writer’s Journey. The Virgin’s Promise is considered to be Vogler’s female counterpart to the Hero archetype, presenting the Virgin, a female archetype who “sets out on a path of self-fulfillment despite the wishes of her community. She must explore her creative, spiritual, or sexual awakening or suffer severe psychological damage.”
